What Is the Cundī DharmaORIGIN · 名号与经典依据

Cundī Bodhisattva bears the full title Great Cundī, Mother of Seven Koṭis of Buddhas. "Cundī" means purity — a nature immaculately clear and luminous. "Seven koṭis" means countless: innumerable Buddhas of the past proclaimed this mantra and awakened through this practice, which is why Cundī is honored as the "Mother of Buddhas" — the source from which the Buddhas of the three times are born.

According to the Cundī Dhāraṇī Sūtra, Śākyamuni Buddha, dwelling at Jetavana in Śrāvastī, beheld the beings of the future — beings of meager merit and heavy karma — and, moved by compassion, entered the samādhi of Cundī and proclaimed the Cundī mantra spoken by seven koṭis of Buddhas of the past. The Mahāyāna Sublime Treasure King Sūtra likewise records that seventy-seven koṭis of Tathāgatas manifested together and jointly proclaimed it.

The hallmark of the Cundī gate is its openness and accessibility. The sūtra states plainly that monastics and laypeople alike, in any condition of life, may take up the recitation with a sincere heart. With no severe prerequisites, it has been embraced for over a thousand years and became one of the most widely practiced esoteric methods in Chinese Buddhism.

准提佛母圣像The Image of CundīICONOGRAPHY · 三目十八臂

Cundī is most often depicted with three eyes and eighteen arms: her body a golden white, the third eye signifying the wisdom that beholds all beings with compassion; the eighteen arms hold ritual implements as she sits in full lotus upon a lotus throne. The arms are not literal limbs but a symbol of the eighteen distinctive qualities of a Buddha — perfect wisdom, merit and skillful means that break the bonds of the eighteen dhātus (the six faculties, six objects and six consciousnesses) and deliver all beings. Four-armed and eight-armed forms also exist.

The Cundī mantra is the heart of this practice. Before reciting it, one traditionally chants the opening gāthā composed by Nāgārjuna — "I bow my head in refuge in Susiddhi, and prostrate to the Seven Koṭis; I now praise the Great Cundī — may compassion embrace and protect us" — inviting Cundī Bodhisattva to the place of practice, then recites the mantra itself. The mantra is traditionally recited in its Chinese transliteration, shown below with pinyin and the Sanskrit original.

MING · FOUR LESSONS OF LIAOFAN

Yuan Liaofan Changes His Destiny

As a young man, Yuan Liaofan met a master diviner named Kong who calculated his entire life — his exam rankings year by year, his official posts, even that he would die at a set age without an heir. For twenty years every prediction came true to the letter, and Liaofan resigned himself: all is fated, why strive?

Then at Qixia Mountain he met the Chan master Yungu, and they sat facing each other three days and nights. The master taught him that destiny is self-made and fortune self-sought: only the ordinary are bound by the numbers; reform, goodness and hidden virtue remake one's lot. He then transmitted the Cundī mantra with this instruction:

Simply hold the Cundī mantra — without counting, without interruption, until it is utterly ripe: reciting yet not reciting, not reciting yet reciting. When the stream of thought no longer stirs, it will prove efficacious."

Liaofan set about remaking his life — doing good and reciting daily. Every one of Kong's calculations then failed: destined to be childless, he raised a worthy son; never to pass the highest examination, he became a jinshi; fated to die at fifty-three, he lived to seventy-four. He set the story down as a family instruction — the Four Lessons of Liaofan — through which the Cundī mantra became known throughout China for four centuries.

Signs Promised in the Sūtra

In the Cundī Dhāraṇī Sūtra the Buddha himself describes the signs of progress: one who recites the full count with a whole heart may dream of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, or dream of spitting out black matter — a sign of obstructions dissolving; with deeper practice come dreams of white food and drink, of soaring through the sky, crossing great rivers and seas, climbing towers and mountains, or meeting virtuous monks — all signs that karma is clearing and one's aims will be fulfilled.

The sūtra adds that one who practices before the mirror altar with ripened concentration may behold sacred images in the mirror. These are not mystifications but markers the Buddha gave so that practitioners can gauge their own progress and grow in confidence.

Daodian's Fortunate Encounter

The Liao master Daodian studied the full range of exoteric and esoteric teaching, grieved that beings of the degenerate age were too burdened for the great systems, and searched for one gate open to everyone. He found it in the Cundī practice — open to lay and monastic alike, designed precisely for beings of thin merit. In the closing chapter of his Essentials, "Rejoicing at the Encounter," he tells of the countless lifetimes he wandered before meeting so complete a teaching in this one.

His book has now carried the practice for over nine hundred years, with the great masters of the Ming and Qing practicing and teaching from it in turn — a single text sustaining a millennium of transmission, which is perhaps the greatest response of all.

Responses come to sincerity, not to grasping. Recite with a pure, respectful and constant heart and cause and effect will not fail; approached as a gamble, the practice cannot connect. Present-day practitioners share many such accounts, best exchanged and verified in group practice at an authentic monastery.
